What are the different types of vape devices?

The world of vaping can be as complex or as simple as you make it. In this blog, we will discuss the varying types of devices that come in all shapes and sizes. Aesthetically you will find there to be similarities between multiple categories, but in terms of function, each type of device brings to the table different effects. The main groups we will focus on are as follows: regulated mods, unregulated mods, pod devices, and disposables.

Regulated Mods

 This style of device is one of the most popular on the market today that isn’t a pod. These devices offer several safety features on them to protect the user. These safety features include but aren’t limited to: low resistance protection, low voltage protection, reverse battery protection, atomizer short protection, temperature regulation, and over heat protection. These types of devices offer the highest level of customization as they let the user choose the wattage or temperature they vape at. Another feature they offer is supporting different metal types such as nickel, titanium, and stainless steel. These types of systems are commonly referred to as “box mods”, although this name could also classify unregulated mods as well.

External vs Internal Battery Devices

External batteries are any batteries that you can remove. It is best to remove the battery in this type of device for charging purposes. Charging the battery inside of the device will typically cause damage to the board and the battery itself leading to the shortened life span of the device.

Internal batteries are built into the device. With this type of device, you can’t remove the battery to either replace or charge it. These devices are best charged through a wall adapter that has an output of no more than a 1000mA. This will lead to the decreased life of the battery and will cause excessive heat build in the device. In the most extreme cases, it may lead to a vent. Desktop computers, laptops, game systems, and “slow charging” adapters all output less than 1000mA and are safe to charge from. Most cell phone chargers are fast chargers outputting more than 1000mA. Due to this, cell phone chargers are not recommended to charge these devices. With internal batteries, a good rule of thumb is the slower the charge the better.

Internal batteries should not be exposed to high heat environments. They should never be exposed to water.

Unregulated Mods

This type of device is only for advanced users and offers no built in safety features. Due to this, it requires the user to have prior vaping knowledge in order to operate it safely. The user must know the resistance of the coil being used and the max amperage of the battery or batteries being used. If the resistance of the coil is too low for the battery, it will put too much strain on the battery and can lead to a battery venting. A good way to see if a user is prepared for such a device is by understanding Ohm’s law. This style also runs purely off of the voltage that is in the battery. This means there is no customization built into the device as far as power settings. The vape will be purely dictated by the coil and the voltage left in the battery. With unregulated mods it is extremely important to make sure the battery/batteries are put in the correct way and the wraps have no nicks or tears, as well as being certain that there is no short within the coil. Proper safety precautions are must when it comes to unregulated devices.

Mechanical Mods

Single battery mechanical mod: As the name states, this is a type of mechanical mod that takes a single battery. These tend to be the most popular form of mechanical mods. These are also the simplest form, as it is just a metal tube with a button to complete the circuit. 

Series mechanical mod: This type of mechanical device takes 2 or more batteries in it. With this kind of device the batteries are wired from positive to negative. This increases the voltage but keeps the amp draw the same as a single battery. What this translates to is a stronger hit and lower coil ramp up time. However the trade off with a series circuit is that the battery life is the same as a single battery and the resistance of the coil has to be higher, therefore draining the batteries in the same time as one.

Parallel mechanical mod: This is another device that takes 2 or more batteries. With this device, the batteries are wired from positive to positive terminals and negative to negative terminals. This results in the amperage increasing for every battery in the circuit. The voltage remains the same as a single battery. What this translates to is a longer battery life and the ability to use a lower resistance coil. The trade off is a lower ramp up time and a less powerful hit. 

Pod Systems

Pod systems are small low powered devices designed to work best with salt nicotine liquids. Pod systems are more catered to those who are looking either to quit smoking or those who want a simple and easy vaping experience. They do not have the same level of customization that mods do. They come in two different types: coil based and pod based.

Pod based systems require the user to replace the pod itself once the coil inside burns out. The pod and coil are built together and are not able to be separated. 

Coil based systems require the user to just replace the coil once it has burned out. The advantage with these is that the entire pod does not have to be replaced each time the coil goes bad.

Disposable Devices

Disposable electronic cigarettes (also known as E-hookah, disposable pen) are a relatively new type of e-cig on the market and is one of the simplest. Most commonly containing 50mg of salt nicotine, these pens are designed to have a predetermined amount of life, measured in “puffs”. They are a closed system, meaning they have a limited battery and pre-filled liquid and are designed to not be altered. Once the battery has run out of charge, they are to be disposed of.
